Lauren Daigle is admired by many people both young and old. Whether it’s her incredible voice or infectious personality, the world may never know. (Though honestly it’s probably both.) After winning three Dove Awards last week and telling us about her upcoming Christmas tour with For King & Country, we have been in high suspense for her Christmas album, Behold, releasing October 21st!
This is Lauren’s first Christmas album and she truly made it her own. If you know anything about Lauren Daigle, you know she stays true to her Southern roots. A Louisiana girl at heart, Lauren grew up around New Orleans jazz. (And really great food, which she talks more about here!) It was important to Lauren to bring that hometown jazz sound to this album, and thank goodness she did.
The album picks up with a Christmas favorite, “Jingle Bells”. It’s the perfect start to what is sure to be an album loved by many. The jazzy horn solos within the song give it a beautiful twist that sets this track apart from many other covers. The smooth transition into “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” shows that Lauren’s artistry is only growing better with time. This second track will cause you to reminisce on past Christmas memories, possibly with involvement of a crackling fire and a hot mug of your favorite holiday drink.
Other Christmas classics such as “What Child is This”, “Little Drummer Boy”, and “White Christmas” are done in a way that will make you long for cold weather and Christmas spirit. Seriously though – don’t listen to this album if you’re not ready to be put in some major Christmas spirit! These soft jazz tracks are filled with bluesy guitar riffs and soft percussion so well done that they’ll make waiting for her Christmas tour with For King & Country nearly impossible.
A favorite on this album is sure to be “Light of the World”. Written by Jason Ingram and Paul Mabury, this song is an original composition. Though Daigle has previously released this song, her version on Behold is slightly different. This second rendition better fits with the laid-back Christmas sounds on Behold, though two versions of any Lauren Daigle song are food for the soul. “Light of the World” is specifically about the birth of Jesus and the beauty that came from it. Each song on this album is a masterpiece in itself, but “Light of the World” truly shows off Lauren’s ever-growing talent.
“O Holy Night” begins with piano accompaniment and showcases Lauren’s voice in a breathtaking way. The soft jazz kicks in later on into the song, but Lauren’s voice is still the focal point of the song. Then comes “Little Drummer Boy” with a steady guitar pattern that keeps beat throughout the song. Lauren kept this a soft and steady rendition with that New Orleans Jazz sound rounding it out in a perfect way. The album ends with the Christmas classic “Silent Night”, and when the album ends you’ll be wishing for more – no joke.
Overall, we couldn’t be happier with this album. Lauren is growing as a musician and it is evident with Behold. This project has come at just the right time, as it shows exactly why Lauren has been honored with six Dove Awards in a short two years. They say to stick to your roots, and Lauren has done so in a beautiful way – through music. Though it may only be October, Christmas is right around the corner and this is an album that will get you ready for family time and Christmas desserts. Oh – and cooler weather, because we know everyone is wishing for some of that! Grab this as soon as you can, because it’s a purchase well worth every penny. Keep up the great work, Lauren.
